High Carb, Low GI Diet is most effective in reducing CV risk

July 2nd, 2007

Further research on the effects of carbohydrate and the glycaemic index has proven that the most effective diet to reduce cardiovascular risk is one featuring a high carbohydrate content, but low glycaemic index.

A recent randomised controlled study examined 129 obese people over 12 weeks.  The participants were divided into four groups, each prescribed a different diet, varying in quantities of carbohydrate and Glycaemic Index (GI).

Whilst weight loss remained the same on average across the groups (calorie intake for each diet was equal), the diet highest in low-glycaemic carbohydrates had a significantly positive effect on the factors that contribute to cardiovascular risk.  The researchers found that low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased in that group, but increased in the group fed on a high protein and high GI diet.

The researchers also noted that women on both the high carb, low GI diet, and the high protein, high GI diet both lost 80% more fat mass.
